From Old To New
The story of the building of our new classrooms at Claverdon Primary School.
Thank you for coming to look at our work about our new classrooms!
There are a lot of pictures our our work and the work which was carried out during the build project. As you look through, you will find that it is possible to click on some of the images to see a larger version.

This is a building site.
Report to the site office before entering.
A safety hat, safety footwear and fluorescent jacket must be worn at all times.
Our building work began at the end of the Summer Term when we packed up all our belongings and the huts were moved.
During the Summer holidays the site was prepared and the foundations dug out and the drainage pipes put in.
At the beginning of the Autumn term the steel supports were erected. They were lifted by a very big crane.
The roof was the next to go on.
This was followed by the floor which was cemented.
Next the brickwork was layed.
A lot of window frames were then fitted.
The glass was then put in.
The internal walls were fitted.
It is now up to the plumbers, plasterers, electricians, carpenters and painters to complete it all.
A lot if different people are involved in building our classrooms.
The arcitect draws up the plans.
The plumber lays the pipes.
The carpenter saws the wood.
The plasterer plasters the walls.
The bricklayer lays the bricks.
The electrician routes the wires and cables.
The glazier fits the glass.
The decorator paints the walls.
The site manager organises the men.
All these tradesmen work with different materials.
When the steel structure was erected we studied it carefully and made these pictures

There are lots of right angles
Nearly all the lines are horizontal or vertical
Most of the shapes are squares and rectangles.
Because the bricks are cuboids they fit together perfectly. There is a right way to lay bricks.
This wall will be strong.
And there is a wrong way to lay bricks.
This wall will fall down.
A lot of different work has been taking place on the site.
Hammering |
Building |
Sawing |
Carrying |
Roofing |
Plumbing |
Climbing |

We also wrote these poems about the building site:
Not I said the builder working on the site
Nails hammering,
Builders roofing
Trench digging
Truck driving
Not I said the builders working on the site. Alex
Not I said the builders working on the site
I'm too busy sawing
You are dumper truck driving
Then you started digging
Yesterday you were plumbing
This morning you were nailing
Not I said the builders working on the site. Kelly
Not I said the builders working in the mud
Builders freezing
Wellies squelching
Men hesitating
Just keep on climbing
Dumper truck driving
Bolt of lightning
Not I said the builders working in the mud. Joe
Not I said the builders working on the site
We're cold and soaking
And oh so freezing
It started thundering
We had to keep climbing
Not I said the builders working on the site. Amelia
Not I said the builders working on the site
Hammering and carrying
Nailing and railing
Roofing and sawing
Building and lifting
Dumping and driving
Not I said the builders
So busy working on the site. Kate
Not I said the builders working on the site
Bulldozer driving
Crane lifting
Bricks building
Diggers digging
Truck carrying
Roofers roofing
Not I said the builders working on the site Eliza
Not I said the builders working on the site
Brickies carrying
Dumper driving
Nails hammering
Wood sawing
Pipes lifting
Scaffold climbing
Not I said the builders working on the site Emily

All packed up and nowhere to go!

Was it really like this?
We're on our way

We drew these plans of how we thought our new classroom could look:

We're off.
Finished at last.
| We moved into our new classrooms |
