Choosing a School

Claverdon Primary School

Choosing a school can be very difficult, particularly if it is the first time you have had to make the decision.  Several organisations have produced guide-lines for parents, and we have listed below those that are relevant to primary schools.

When you visit school, ask yourself the following questions:

  • How are you greeted by staff?
  • Are areas attractive?
  • Is there evidence of children's work, or is it all adult?
  • Are you shown round the school and are you able to see children at work?
  • Is there a sense of industry?
  • How do children react to visitors?
  • Do you feel that you would be welcomed as part of the community?
  • How are books displayed and used?
  • Are there displays of work? Is there a learning element?
  • Is there tolerance and respect between all individuals in the school?
  • Are individuals valued?
  • Is there a good, open system of record keeping?
  • What is the quality of documentation available to you?

You need to see evidence that the children are, or have been, involved in these activities:

  • Learning to read, and write, and developing these skills.
  • Calculating and solving mathematical and everyday problems.
  • Working with technology.
  • Learning about science, testing and evaluating.
  • Designing and making.
  • Finding out about people and places.
  • Using different art and craft materials.
  • Appreciating and making music.
  • Taking part in physical activities.
  • Working together.
  • Planning their work.

Do not be afraid to ask questions.  The primary years are so very important for your child's education.  Schools welcome interest, and value parental involvement.  Parents and teachers should work together to provide a happy and hardworking environment for all children.

Ask yourself - would you like to be a pupil at this school?
